It’s now been over three decades since we opened the very first Vision Express store in Gateshead’s MetroCentre..

We’ve come a very long way since then. But our guiding principle remains the same. And that’s to provide an unparalleled level of customer service. A truly individual service, delivered in a professional yet welcoming environment.

Through organic growth and acquisition there are now 575 Vision Express stores across the UK and Ireland – from big city locations to local high street stores. Following the acquisition of Tesco Opticians in 2017, you’ll now find us in larger Tesco stores too.

Eye Care, We Care More

Grand Vision logo In 1997 Vision Express became part of leading international optical retail group GrandVision NV. Operating over 6000 stores in 44 countries across the globe, GrandVision has almost 31,000 employees.

GrandVision’s commitment to long-term investment and growth will open up even more opportunities for career development. And, although we remain a distinct brand, our close association with GrandVision means that these opportunities will not be limited to the UK, with the prospect of working with the group in other countries being a real possibility.

Learning to succeed

Training and development at Vision Express will support your ongoing success in what could be a rewarding and unique career. It will also see you become an expert at delivering a truly individual service.

Learning here is interesting, interactive and informative. It’s also fun. Whatever your role when you start, we’ll equip you with the skills, knowledge and confidence you need to take your career in the right direction.

Starting with a thorough introduction to our business, we’ve put in place a number of training programmes designed to recognise and realise true potential. Their effectiveness is reflected in the fact that nearly 80% of our managers are in place through internal promotion.

Learning and development
opportunities at Vision Express include:

Steps to Success

Comprising of a number of stages, these development programmes are for our store colleagues. At every stage of the journey, you’ll come away with new skills and knowledge to develop you in role.

The Leadership Academy

We recognise that investment in our people and developing talented individuals to become our future managers is key.  Our highly successful leadership development programmes provide role-specific learning that blends classroom training with practical on-the-job experience, specifically designed to support the transition into the next stage in your career, from a first step into management, through to our most senior leadership roles.

Sponsorship for trainee optical professionals

We have an established sponsorship programme for those looking to become a qualified Contact Lens Optician or Dispensing Optician. In addition to financial assistance, the programme includes revision courses and one-to-one support from a dedicated mentor.

Development for optical professionals

As well as the opportunity to gain additional CET points, there’s also scope for our optical professionals to share their expertise by becoming supervisors for the next generation of optometrists, contact lens opticians and dispensing opticians.

There are a number of opportunities for professionals to gain additional skills and responsibilities, in roles such as Regional Optical Lead Optometrist, Professional Development Tutor, Contact Lens Product Advisor, Store Manager or Joint Venture Partner. We also have dedicated professionals working within Support Centre departments, including operations, professional services and learning and development, as well as with product teams.

Support Centre Development

At our Support Centre there are many department-specific training programmes at all levels, along with sponsorship for professional qualifications including, for our finance team, those from the CIMA or ACCA.

The 5% Club

We’re proud to be backing the 5% Club – a nationwide initiative which sees employers commit to having at least 5% of their workforce aged between 16 and 24 on a structured training programme. We’re proud to say that the figure at Vision Express is now closer to 5.5%. We’re the first retailer to promise to provide support and training for our graduates, apprentices and sponsored students.

ApprenticeshipsFor enthusiastic young people we offer a 13-month apprenticeship programme that will give them lots of useful skills and valuable retail experience, plus a Level 2 qualification in Optical Retail and the foundations of a successful future career. To find out more go to our Apprenticeships page.

Recognition and reward

Everyone likes to be recognised for a job well done. Not only recognised, but rewarded. This is why we have a number of bonus and incentive schemes in place which celebrate the people whose contributions exceed all expectations.

Then there are our Vision Express Heroes. These are rather special awards as nominations come from colleagues and customers who have been so impressed with the service they’ve received that they’ve contacted us to say so. We know there are some great people here doing a fantastic job, but it’s so much more rewarding when our customers also recognise people who go the extra mile.

In store customer serviceBenefits

As a large and successful business, we’re able to offer a range of highly attractive benefits. These include, but are certainly not limited to:

Equality and diversity

At Vision Express, we believe everyone should have an equal opportunity to make the most of their talents, irrespective of sex, gender, disability, sexual orientation, religion, belief, race, age or any of the other protected characteristics set out in the Equality Act 2010.

In the workplace we foster and actively promote an inclusive and inspiring culture, where people are enabled to develop to their full potential. A culture where diversity is celebrated and discrimination, in any form, is simply not tolerated. That’s because we value difference and recognise the contribution it makes to our continuing success and a richer, more creative and more productive working environment.

We try to make sure the values of fairness, openness and transparency inform everything we do. And that includes recruitment, where decisions are based solely on talent, potential and ability to do the job.
