In a world where the definition of a perfect work-life balance is constantly evolving, at Vision Express, we want to stand out as a beacon for Eyecare Professionals that are seeking not just a job, but a fulfilling career that aligns with their individual lifestyle.

Picture your ideal working week - a harmonious blend of personal commitments and professional growth. Now, imagine a workplace that not only understands this, but actively encourages to and supports it

We caught up with one of our valued colleagues, Ravinder, to shed a light on the unique and empowering aspect of flexible working for her, at Vision Express

From tailoring work hours to suit her personal commitments, to embracing those extra hours for the school run, Ravinder shares insights that might just spark the inspiration you've been looking for to take your career in eyecare to new heights.

What has been your career journey so far with Vision Express?

"My career at Vision Express started just over three years ago, where I became a Resident Optometrist. Since then, I have taken on the additional responsibility of being a Pre-Reg Supervisor, been on maternity leave and most recently become a Professional Development Tutor."

You've progressed to a Professional Development Tutor? That's amazing! Now you work flexibly, what does your working week look like?

"Now that I'm working flexibly at Vision Express, my working week involves having set regular days of work, which allow me to schedule my childcare.

"It involves me having weekends off work, giving me dedicated time with my family outside of work and it also involves having an adjusted shift pattern, where I start work slightly later, and also finish later. This allows me to do the school and nursery drop-offs in the morning before coming into work."

We know 'flexible working' can mean something different to everyone. What does flexibility mean to you?

"To me, flexibility means being empowered to find a work pattern that allows me to focus on work and my commitments outside of work effectively, and so striking a really healthy work life balance.

"It also means finding a solution between myself and my manager where both sides can benefit."

How important is flexible working for you?

"I consider flexible working to be so important; by maintaining a healthy work-life balance, it supports your mental health and well-being and knowing that your responsibilities and commitments outside of work are being supported by a manager, does make you feel really valued and that helps you stay focused and engaged when you are in work."

What has flexible working allowed you to do?

"Flexible working has allowed me to pursue a career that I'm so passionate about. It's meant that I've been able to work without reducing my hours, or even having to take a career break with my children while they are so young."

Do you feel like you've still had opportunities and progression whilst you've been working flexibly?

"Flexible working has not limited my progression. Since returning from maternity leave, and in addition to being a Resident Optometrist, I've taken on a new role as a Professional Development Tutor for the West Midlands."
